xPages custom CMS - a business website

Chris Connor  January 20 2011 07:27:32 AM
As part of my consulting business I have undertaken the exercise of putting together my business website on xPages. Having been involved in xPages for a while now I realised that this technology would allow me to put together a simple CMS framework which can draw from a variety of information sources.

This website will be used for updating business news, linking social media sources such as blog / twitter / YouTube channels, placing stories and articles of Notes and Domino use with my customers.

The site is fairly simple in nature and is very much a work in progress. The beauty of xPages is of course in it's flexibility. With xPages I can easily modify shared design elements to make substantial changes to structure or content very quickly.

Of course with this being an xPages driven site I can build news articles offline and even preview the design offline too.

As the site grows in content I will be adding a search feature. This is very easy to do and uses standard "Full Text" searching functionality and "type ahead" provided out of the box with Domino / xPages.

Other technology points is that I have used jQuery (I use this a lot in traditional Domino Web 2.0 applications as well as xPages). This helped keep things light from a size perspective. I also find it very easy to use from a personal point of view. I have done a fair bit of dojo work but in terms of speed and performance this seemed good. I am aware that this could be changing soon though...... ;-)

Comments (of a constructive nature) and questions welcome!!! Keen to meet up with anyone at #LS11 to chat over this site or any technologies around it.

So feel free to pop over to BSS IT Solutions to have a look!!

I will do a few follow up posts on the Notes / Domino "blog reader" and "news ticker" custom control on the front page. This was really easy to do with standard xPages repeat controls etc.....
